Why web application development as opposed to traditional software development?

As web applications became more and more sophisticated, the era of windows applications or traditional software development has effectively come to an end. Platform neutral and portable nature of web application development has made it the platform of choice. Some key advantages of web-based application development approach are as follows:

1. Those of us who have been around for some time clearly remember the days of "green screen" - DOS based interface. Then came the GUI interface which was a major improvement over DOS based interface. And finally with web based interface the issue of "easy to use interface" took a major stride forward. Most, if not all, of us use the web for one reason or the other. A properly designed web application is as easy to use as surfing the web.

2. Web application is installed on a server(s) and accessed by the user through an industry standard browser whereas a traditional software development effort requires creating verions of the software to account for a variety of platform such as windows vista, Mac, OS-2 etc. This means the traditional approach requires more time and money to accomodate different platforms.

3. In the traditional software development approach a client is installed on the user end to access the application whereas a web application can be accessed through any industry accepted browser.
